Carpenter in Kingston, NY
I'm William of Ridge Renovation and Repair, a carpenter with 20+ years of carpentry experience. I take carpentry and repair jobs in Kingston and the towns around it, and I do the work myself.
Carpentry jobs I take in Kingston
Most of my work is a week or less: the jobs that are too small for a big remodeling company but too much for a weekend. In Kingston that usually means:
- Trim and finish carpentry: baseboard, door and window casing, crown molding, built-ins, stair parts and railings
- Doors and windows: new interior and exterior doors, storm doors, sticking or sagging doors fixed, window installs and trim
- Porches and decks: rotted boards, railings and steps replaced, porch repairs, small new decks
- Sheetrock repair: holes, cracks and water-damaged sections patched
- Kitchen and bath carpentry: cabinets, vanities, shelving and trim
- General repairs: punch lists, rot repair, loose railings, and fixes before a sale or a new tenant
Working on Kingston's older homes
A lot of Kingston's houses are old, from the Stockade District and Uptown to Midtown and down to the Rondout. Older houses bring their own carpentry problems: walls and door openings that aren't square anymore, plaster instead of drywall, trim profiles you can't buy at the lumberyard, and porches that have taken decades of freeze and thaw.
That kind of work takes patience. A new door in an out-of-square opening has to be shimmed and scribed so it closes right. New casing has to sit flat against a wall that isn't. Patching old plaster or sheetrock has to blend with the wall around it. I take the time to fit things to the house instead of forcing the house to fit the part.
Newer homes in the Town of Ulster, Lake Katrine and the surrounding towns get the same care, usually with fewer surprises behind the walls.
Kingston neighborhoods and nearby towns
In the city: Uptown and the Stockade District, Midtown, and the Rondout. Nearby: the Town of Ulster, Lake Katrine, Port Ewen and Esopus, and Hurley. I also work across the rest of Ulster County, including Saugerties, New Paltz, Rosendale, Stone Ridge, High Falls and Marbletown.

Questions Kingston homeowners ask
Do I need a permit for a deck in Kingston?
Often, yes. New decks and structural work usually need a building permit, and small repairs usually don't, but the rules are set locally. Inside the city, check with the City of Kingston Building Safety Division. In the Town of Ulster, Esopus or Hurley, check with that town's building department. I'll talk it through with you at the estimate.
Can you match the old trim in my house?
In most cases, yes. Matching existing casing, baseboard and molding profiles is a big part of trim work in older homes. Sometimes that means a stock profile that's close, and sometimes it means building up a profile from several pieces. I'll show you the options before I start.
How soon can you come look at the job?
Call or text with your address area and a short description, plus photos if you can. If I'm on a job and can't pick up, leave a message and I'll call you back to set up a time.
What does an estimate cost?
Nothing. Estimates are free.
What kinds of jobs do you take?
Carpentry and repair work that I do myself, usually a week of work or less: trim, doors, windows, decks and porches, sheetrock repair, kitchen and bath carpentry, and general repairs. I don't do roofing, electrical or plumbing.
